If you have done something terrible in your life, you are marked with a crow and you are forgotten. This is seen as the worst possible thing that could happen to you. Leora’s father just passed away. She finds comfort in the fact that he was a good man and that she will be able to read his book any time she wants. But then she gets a flashback from her childhood to a memory she forgot existed. Her father had the tattoo of a crow on the back of his head, hidden under his hair. If anyone finds out, her father will be forgotten. Meanwhile, a new mayor has been elected in their city. He talks about the threat of the blanks, people who refuse to get tattoos who have been banished and are the inked people’s enemies. Leora begins her new apprenticeship as an inker, and soon she learns the secrets of her family and of the society she is living in.

Everyone wants to work at this factory because the materials they use to make the watches glow is new and exciting. Many even believe that the material can improve your health. When the women leave work, they glow from the particles in the air. Their bosses encourage them to practice painting on themselves so they can improve their painting skills. The girls paint their teeth and their nails with the paint. Suddenly, some of the girls start to get sick. Then Lydia’s sister starts to get sick, and when she doesn’t get better, Lydia decides she needs to figure out what is really going on at the factory. Julie and Lydia’s stories are connected.
