Published: 2018 Gus lives with his grandma in Nowhere, Arizona. Everyone in town is extremely poor, and there's not a lot of hope for the future of anyone who grows up there. The book starts with Gus being bullied by a mean boy named Bo. Bo is trying to get Gus to eat a jumping cholla cactus, a cactus known for being extremely dangerous and sharp. When Rossi, the best dirt bike rider in town, stands up for Gus, she is forced to give her most prized possession, her dirt bike, to Bo in order to save him. Gus feels terrible. Bo says that the only way he will give the dirt bike back to Rossi is if Gus goes into the Dead Frenchman Mine and finds a piece of gold. This mine is old and extremely dangerous. People have died in there when portions of it collapsed in on them. Gus decides that he needs to do this. With the help of Rossi and some other boys Gus sets out on this dangerous adventure. 24 Hours in Nowhere takes place within the span of twenty-four hours. Gus is such a relatable character to anyone who ever feels like they don't fit in. There is a lightness to this book that I really enjoyed, especially with all the tough and dark topics that are mentioned.

Published: 2017 THIS BOOK! I read this book when a student recommended it to me. She said that it was absolutely amazing and that I had to read it. She was right. Cora and Hannah have recently become step-sisters when their parents got married. Cora has had some rough times in her life and still struggles with some mental health issues. Hannah is the beautiful and popular perfect child everyone loves. Uncanny takes place in the future, where robots called cannies exist to help humans. They can sense when you're in danger, and they have records of everything that they see. People also have little computers installed in their brains that can record what they see. You can review your recordings, called vids, and keep them or delete them. One night when Hannah and Cora are home alone, Hannah falls down a flight of stairs and dies. No one knows exactly what happened because someone had turned off the house canny at the time of the accident. Cora wakes up with no memories of what happened that night. When people start to suspect that she pushed her sister and killed her, Cora needs to figure out what really happened that night. What a great sci-fi/mystery combo. I seriously could not put this book down. I needed to know the ending. And that ending! Wow. I didn't see it coming. It takes a lot to surprise me, but Uncanny did. Author: Luanne Rice
Published: 2019 Emily has had a really tough year. Her best friend, Lizzie, passed away from cancer, and she still can't believe that she is really gone. On the way home from school, Emily runs into Lizzie's younger sister. Lizzie's family moved away after Lizzie's death but are back to visit her grave now that it is near the one year anniversary of her death. Chloe, Lizzie's sister, asks Emily if she wants to come to the cemetery with them. Emily agrees. She gets into their van, and before she knows it she discovers that they are not going to the cemetery. Lizzie's family has not been able to let Lizzie go, so they have decided to do something about it. Pretend She's Here is a very interesting thriller about a family who cannot let go of their loved one. Seventh and eighth grade readers will love this story. Author: Celia C. Perez
Published: 2017 Maria Luisa, or Malu as she likes to be called, is moving across the country for two years with her mom for her mom's work. She is devastated to leave her dad and her friends behind. Her parents are divorced. Malu feels like she has more in common with her dad rather than her mom who is more into Mexican culture. Malu refers to her mom as Super-Mexican because of the way Malu feels like her mom tries to push the culture onto her. Malu is much more into punk--the style, the music, everything. When her school is having a talent show, she convinces a few other kids to start a punk band with her. After they audition, they find out that they didn't get chosen as one of the acts. When they find out the reason, Malu decides they need to do something to take a stand. The First Rule of Punk is a fantastic story about standing out and being who you are. I absolutely loved Malu. She is creative, and it was entertaining to be able to see the zines she created. |
