Published: 2020 Cinderella is Dead takes place 200 years after Cinderella married Prince Charming and lived happily ever after. She has been dead for years and years, but the tradition she started on the night of the ball lives on. Every year, teenage girls come to the annual ball at the palace where the men in the kingdom are able to choose any girl they want and the girl must marry him. If a girl is not chosen by a man after attending the ball for a few years, she disappears and is never heard from again. Sophia is about to attend her first ball, but there is nothing she wants less than to get married. She sees how women are treated like possessions in the kingdom. Women must do what the men in their life tell them to do or they will be "forfeited," which means they are sent to the palace where they disappear. On the night of the ball, Sophia tries to convince her best friend Erin to run away with her so they can be together, but Erin refuses, saying it's too dangerous, that they must do what is expected of them. Sophia escapes and runs into, Constance, the last living descendent of one of Cinderella's ugly stepsisters. But it turns out that the story they have been told about Cinderella, her stepsisters, and Prince Charming are not all true. There is a lot more to the story, and it is up to Sophia and Constance to figure out how to get rid of the king and disrupt the way things have always been. Cinderella is Dead is an absolutely fantastic retelling of Cinderella. I loved all the girl power vibes and the way Sophia is unapologetically herself.

Published: 2019 We all know the story of Cinderella. She had an evil stepmother and two evil, ugly stepsisters who made her life miserable. In Stepsister, the stepsisters tried to trick the prince into thinking they were the mystery girl he met at the ball by cutting off their toes to make their feet fit in the glass slipper. When he was not fooled, Cinderella became queen and the whole world learned how terrible her family treated her. They become outcasts, and their whole fancy lifestyle is gone. Isabelle is one of the ugly stepsisters. She has hate in her heart. Isabelle doesn't know it, but her destiny is already mapped out, and it is very, very dark. Her life will come to an end soon. She is destined to always be the ugly stepsister. But there's someone out there who wants to change Isabelle's destiny. Can a heart so full of anger and hate change? Stepsister is one of my favorite books that I have read this year! There is so much about forgiveness and girl power and dark fairy tale-ness that I absolutely loved. Author: Melissa Bashardoust
Published: 2017 This fairytale is the perfect combination of Frozen and Snow White. Mina's mother is dead, and her father is an evil magician. When Mina was younger, her heart stopped working right so her father cut it out and replaced it with a glass one. He always told her that she will never be able to love anyone because of that. When she gets older she meets the king and finally starts to believe that maybe she can feel love after all. Lynet is the king's daughter. She looks exactly like her mother who passed away giving birth to Lynet. Her dad always talks about how much she looks like her mom and hopes she will grow up to be just like her. But Lynet doesn't want that. She would rather be like her stepmother, Mina. Then Lynet finds out something about her past that changes everything she has ever known. Soon after her discovery, the king makes a decision that turns Mina against Lynet. Suddenly mother and daughter are fighting. Only one can be queen. This is a fantastic fractured fairytale about good and evil that kept me hooked until the very end! Author: Liz Braswell
Published: 2016 This is a retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast. In this book, Belle's mother was the enchantress who cursed the beast and his castle. The chapters in this book flip back and forth between Belle in the present and her parents in the past. In the movie, we don't know anything about Belle's mom, but this book changes that. Her mom is named Rosalind, and she is a magical being. In this time, all magical beings are seen as evil creatures by many. They are being chased out of the town, so it is a very dangerous time to be magical. In the present day chapters, we meet Belle who remembers nothing of her mom who disappeared when Belle was young. Strangely, Belle's dad also can't remember much about that time. Belle's story follows the movie at first--she becomes imprisoned by the beast and must live in the castle. Then the story opens up, and we get to learn what happened to Belle's mother and how she came to put a curse on the beast. This is such a great story for those who love fractured fairy tales. I loved the depth Braswell added to this story.
