Now that he's gone, Charlie is on his own. Joe and Charlie write letters to each other keeping each other posted on their lives. Joe shares his problems with another soldier who doesn't like him. He also talks about a secret mission he has to go on. Charlie writes about how big of a hero he thinks his brother Joe is, even though Joe disagrees and doesn't think he's doing anything very heroic. Both are worried Joe won't come back, but they don't write about that. Brave Like My Brother is a good story about the bond between brothers. It is a quick historical fiction book.

Published: 2016 Ravi just moved to the United States from India. Back in India he used to be the smartest in his class and very popular. When he starts his new school he thinks that he will be at the top of his class and have lots of friends. However, the teacher starts out by pronouncing his name wrong and tells him he needs to slow down when he talks because they can't understand his accent. Then she suggests that maybe he would benefit from getting a little extra help. Ravi is mortified, but he thinks that he at least will make friends with the only other Indian student in class, Dillon. Joe is on his own ever since his best friends moved away. He sits alone at lunch now, and he tries to avoid the biggest bully in school Dillon. What makes this year even worse is that his mom just started a new job as a lunch helper. This is fuel for Dillon's jokes this year. When Ravi discovers that Dillon is actually a bully, he finds himself sitting alone at the table with Joe at lunch. Save Me Seat is a fantastic book about the people who don't fit in and how sometimes all it takes is an act of kindness to change that. Author: Sharon Creech
Published: 2001 Anyone who has ever had a pet will love this short and sweet little book. Jack is in Miss Stretchberry's class, and in her class they read a lot of poems. They also have to write a lot of poems. At first Jack doesn't want to write poetry because he thinks it's for girls; however, he does what the teacher says. Soon his teacher wants to display Jack's poems for everyone to see. Are they really that good? Jack writes about his dog and a blue car covered in mud that changed his life. Love That Dog is a great book, written in verse, about loss that readers will fly through. Author: Andrew Clements
Published: 2008 Jay and Ray are twin boys who look exactly alike. The only thing that is different about them is that one of them has a freckle on his ankle. The boys have just moved to a new town and have to start at a new school. On the first day of school Ray is sick, so Jay has to go alone. What makes his day even more interesting is that the teachers and the office act like they don't even know Ray exists. Due to a paperwork error, the school thinks that Jay is the only new kid at school! Jay doesn't correct anyone because he realizes that it's really nice to not be known as "one of the twins." People actually know who he is and get to know him as a person. When Ray is sick a second day, Jay decides on a plan. What if the boys pretend to be the same person and only go to school every other day? No one has to know that they are twins. Lost and Found is a funny book that kids who sometimes feel overlooked (especially if they're twins) will be able to relate to! Author: S.A. Bodeen

Her ex-best friend Seth is the prince of Alexandria, and he has been gone a lot ever since his mom died and he had to learn how to rule. Whenever Kiva does see Seth, he is cold to her and hardly acknowledges her existence. One day, though, he comes up to her and whispers, "You world is as you see it to be. Until it isn't." Kiva has no idea what that means. Then an earthquake hits, and it changes everything. Suddenly Kiva finds herself being forced to work with Seth. She discovers the dark secrets their parents were keeping from them about the world they live in. The Tomb is a really interesting science fiction book. The relationship between Seth and Kiva is unhealthy, but if readers can ignore that part, the main storyline is extremely interesting and unique. Author: Gennifer Choldenko
Published: 2004 Moose's dad got a job working as a guard on Alcatraz Island, the home of a prison that holds the most dangerous criminals. Moose has to leave his school so his family can move to the island. Not only is the family moving because of Moose's dad's new job, but they are also moving so that Moose's sister Natalie can go to a really good school that helps people like her. Natalie has autism, though in the 1930s they don't really have a name for it yet. She is older than Moose but she always needs to have someone watching her in case she throws one of her tantrums. Moose meets Piper, the daughter of the warden of the prison, and right away he can tell that she will get him into trouble. She comes up with all these plans to make money off the prison, including having the students in her class pay her money to have her bring their dirty laundry to the prison so that famous prisoners like Al Capone can was their clothes. Moose tries to stay out of trouble, but it always seems to find him. Al Capone Does My Shirts is a very interesting book that looks at what life was like for the people (who were not prisoners) living on Alcatraz Island and also about what life was like for families of those who had autism back in a time when people didn't understand it. While packing things up to move to her new house with her new soon-to-be step dad, Samantha discovers old newspaper articles about her twin sister's death and items from the funeral. She reads the articles and finds out that her sister's body was never found. Samantha believes that there is a chance that her twin sister is still alive. She decides to track down her dad to find out what really happened that night ten years ago. Is it possible for Samantha's sister to be alive somewhere? Samantha will do anything to find out. Do You Know the Monkey Man is a great mystery book that will draw keep readers guessing until the end. |
