Billy loves animals and actually is known as the snake guy because of the time he had a snake in his locker. Long story. Billy decides that it is ridiculous that his father disappeared from their lives. He decides he's going to surprise his dad and his new family and fly to Montana and force his dad to spend time with him. When he shows up, he finds that his dad has a super secret job with the government and that his new family says he disappears for days at a time. When Billy finally gets to see his dad, he discovers that there is more to this top secret job than his new family even knows about. Billy finds himself joining his dad and is in for an adventure of a lifetime. This is a great book about families and wildlife that will interest those who love nature and the outdoors. And super secret spy missions.

She is given an extremely painful drug and is told that she will be living here. For four years, she will be trained by an organization called FATE to become a Shadow, someone who is assigned to protect an FIP (a future important person). Scientists have seen the future and have discovered the people that will be extremely important in 50 years. In order to make sure that no harm comes to them, FATE trains people to become Shadows, or bodyguards that are supposed to watch over and protect these FIPs. In order to become a Shadow, you must go through grueling and painful training. Not everyone survives. Ren survives four years at FATE and suddenly she is given her FIP to guard with her life. But when people show up to attack her FIP shortly after she gets her assignment, she worries that there's more to the story than FATE told her. This is a really interesting science fiction mystery that captured my interest until the very end! Ren is a strong, funny character. Author: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Tailpipe the giant, angry turkey who chases Zack around and attacks him. His dad and his friends tell him to chill out, that it's just a turkey but they don't know what it's like! Zack comes up with a plan to scare Tailpipe and keep him away from Zack. He and Josie, his grandparents' neighbor, try to come up with an invention. But as they are coming up with a solution to this problem, they discover that there have been a series of thefts taking place in the area. Maybe they can create something that will not only scare a giant turkey but also maybe catch the thief. This is a quick funny mystery that kids will love! Author: Antony John

He used to be great at baseball and popular, always hanging out with the boys on the baseball team. Now, he avoids his old teammates and is bullied by the star player, Logan. Then a new kid shows up at school. His name is Ruben, but he goes by Double-Wide or Dee-Dub because of how big of a kid he is. Dee-Dub is different from all the other kids. For one thing, he always says what he is thinking. And he doesn't treat Noah like he's any different from the other kids at school. When Logan goes too far, suddenly Noah's friend Alyssa ends up competing with him to see who is the better baseball player. Noah decides that Logan needs to lose, so he and Dee-Dub help Alyssa train so they can take Logan down. This book is a wonderful book about the importance of never giving up and how we should celebrate our differences. Fans of Wonder will love Mascot. Author: Jacqueline Woodson

Every Friday Ms. Laverne leads the six kids to the old art room where she leaves them by themselves. She tells them that they have one hour to just talk with each other with no adult or other students around. At first the kids think it's kind of dumb, but then they start opening up to each other. One boy's father was taken by immigration, and his family has no idea where he is. One girl's father is in prison, so she has been living with her uncle since she was three. One boy is bullied so bad every day after school he has to hide marks on his skin. Another boy talks about how his dad gave him certain rules he has to follow because he is a black boy, rules that white people don't need to worry about. This hour every Friday has become something special to these kids. This book looks at a lot of current issues many students are facing and can relate with. Author: Katherine Applegate

His brother and father were killed when their camp is attacked by hateful men and his mom is missing. He travels to the United States by himself to live with his aunt and cousin in Minnesota. His cousin, Ganwar, thinks that they will never fit in in America no matter how long they live there. He has been struggling with that ever since he has lived there. Kek feels guilty that he is alive and in the United States while so many in Sudan are not. He is holding on to the hope that his mom is alive somewhere on her way to find him. Meanwhile he is trying to figure out how living in America works. He finds a job taking care of a cow for an older woman named Lou, and he befriends a young girl named Hannah who is in foster care. This is a great book written in verse that looks at one young boy's experience as a refugee. Author: Kody Keplinger

When a school shooter takes the lives of several of his high school classmates and teachers, one girl who died stood up for her faith and was killed because of it. The girl's parents took comfort in the fact that she died standing up for her beliefs. They want to write a book about their brave, strong, religious little girl. The only problem is that Haley was there in that bathroom. She was best friends with Sarah, the girl with the cross necklace, and what everyone thinks happened that day in the bathroom didn't happen like that. Three years after the shooting Haley and the other survivors of the shooting are still having a tough time dealing with the trauma. Haley thinks it would be best if she told the truth about what really happened in that bathroom. But not everyone is ready to hear it. This is an important book that deals with a very tough topic that many teens, sadly, can relate to. Author: Renee Watson

She feels like she is an outsider at school. When the guidance counselor signs Jade up for a program called Woman to Woman, Jade agrees only because if she completes the program she will get a college scholarship. Woman to Woman is a mentorship program where young girls are paired up with an adult. The group meets and takes the girls on all kinds of experiences that they would not have gotten on their own. Jade feels like the fact that her guidance counselor recommended her means that there's something wrong with her that maybe a mentor can fix. Then she meets her mentor Maxine, and she's not at all what Jade expected. Meanwhile, Jade is working on making friends. But it's hard to make friends with people who don't understand racism when they see it. This is a fantastic book about a girl who is learning how to speak up for herself. It deals with some of the same issues as All American Boys and The Hate U Give. Author: Emma Carroll
