Published: 2016 The Other Boy is about a boy named Shane. He is a regular boy who plays sports with his best friend Josh and loves to draw. Shane is excited to visit his dad for the weekend. His parents are divorced, and he doesn’t usually get along with his dad but this time he’s excited. He’s been looking forward to this trip for a long time because he is finally going to go to the doctor and begin his injections of testosterone. This will make him develop like a boy his age does. The reason he needs these shots is because Shane was born a girl, but he grew up feeling like he was a boy born in the wrong body. At the school he currently goes to, no one knows him from before he transitioned to his life as a boy, so they all treat him like they would anyone else. When his dad finds out that the shots aren’t really reversible, he begins to have second thoughts, and Shane thinks that he’ll never look the way he wants to look. Then Shane says one wrong thing to a school bully, and suddenly the whole school knows his secret. Now he is being bullied, and he has never felt more alone. Who will stand by him? Will other people understand or will they always look at him as different? This is a fantastic book for transgender students or students who would love to understand more about transgender kids. This is a great read for readers who loved George by Alex Gino.

Published: 2014 Eat the Sky Drink the Ocean is probably one of my favorite books that I have read in 2017. It is a collection of feminist fantasy and science fiction short stories that revolve around the power that girls and boys have inside of them. The stories are each unique. Many are written in prose, but there are a few that are written in a graphic novel format. Each story explores something different that relates to being female and being human in society. The stories are written by Indian and Australian women who have collaborated to create these short stories. The stories range in topics from what it feels like to be cat-called on the street to the complete destruction of our environment and our resources to a cooking show that sends people travelling through time. This is definitely something different for readers to try. It would be good for readers who like graphic novels, and the short story format might be appealing to those who have a hard time finishing books. |
