When they get to the United States, Jude realizes that the limited English she knows is not going to be very helpful. She is an outsider, and she has a hard time communicating with others at her school. Her cousin who goes to the same school as her, wants nothing to do with her. She ignores her, and Jude feels very alone. When musical auditions start, Jude considers trying out, but is there any way she would ever get a part? Jude misses her family terribly and worries about people back home all the time, especially with the attacks still going on. Will she ever be able to feel like she is home in the United States? Other Words For Home is a fantastic book written in verse about a brave young girl.

Published: 2019 Sweetie and her mom battle constantly about what Sweetie can and cannot do, and not because Sweetie is a troublemaker. Instead, they fight about what she can and can't do and wear because Sweetie is fat. She is the first one to call herself fat and thinks that it shouldn't be a negative thing. Her mom is just worried about people laughing at her and making fun of her, but Sweetie thinks her mom believes she is not good enough the way she is. Sweetie also is one of the most talented athletes on her track team. She is extremely fast, and others have a hard time believing she can run because of the way she looks. Ashish is heartbroken after his girlfriend breaks up with him. He decides to let his parents choose his next girlfriend (something not uncommon in his culture), after all it worked for his brother! When his parents want to set him up with Sweetie, the only person who says no is Sweetie's mom because she just thinks the two don't match, that maybe they can date if Sweetie loses weight. Sweetie and Ashish decide to date anyway. Can Sweetie get over her secret fear of people laughing at her for being fat? Will Ashish ever be able to move on from his last relationship? There's Something About Sweetie is an adorable book about acceptance and relationships. I absolutely loved Sweetie. What a great role model for all of our young people! Author: Carlos Hernandez
Published: 2019 Sal has a very special ability. He is able to reach into any of the countless universes and transport items, animals, and people to his universe. This especially comes in handy when he is doing his many magic tricks. When Sal makes a raw piece of chicken appear (from another universe) in a bully's locker, Gabi wants to get to the bottom of it. Sal says he just did a magic trick, but Gabi doesn't quite believe him. When Sal comes home and discovers that his mom is home and is cooking a meal for his family, Sal is a little concerned because 1) she died years ago and 2) he didn't transport her from another universe intentionally--she just got there without him. Somehow Sal has lost control of his powers, and he doesn't know how to fix them. Luckily he has Gabi there with him to help. Published: 2018 Resistance takes place in Poland during World War II. Chaya is Jewish, and she has joined a resistance group called Akiva who try to sabotage the Nazis and help Jewish people survive in any way they can, whether that is sneaking food into the ghetto or smuggling Jewish babies out of the ghetto and giving them to a family who isn't Jewish to raise as their own. When Akiva takes action and attacks a group of Nazis, Chaya believes she may be the only group member to survive the attack. Then Esther finds Chaya. Esther was a new member to Akiva who is not as brave or well-trained as any of the other members. She also seems to be keeping a secret from everyone. When the two get orders that they are to take part in another mission, they are sent to the Warsaw Ghetto, a completely hopeless place they never have tried to help before because of how impossible it seemed. Along the way Esther and Chaya must come to terms with the idea that they need to save as many people as possible, even though they will most likely not survive. Resistance is a fantastic story of those who decided to fight to help stop the Nazis knowing they would not survive. Author: Dan Poblocki

More importantly, will they survive the shadow house? Shadow House: The Gathering is a fantastic book for readers of scary stories. Published: 2016 Perry lives a very unique life. He goes to school just like a normal kid, but when he goes home, he goes to a prison. Perry was born in a prison. His mom was pregnant when she was convicted of a crime, and due to some very lucky circumstances, he was able to live there with her in a separate room. The prison is minimum security, so the inmates there have quite a bit more freedom within the prison than you would think. When the wrong person finds out about this unique arrangement, suddenly Perry needs to leave the home he has known his whole life to go live with a foster family. This is unbelievably hard on Perry to be away from his mom and the only home he has ever known. Luckily he is still able to visit. On his visits, Perry decides he wants to understand how his mom was led to being sent to prison, but he finds that she may not be willing to tell him everything. |
