Published: 2003 Despereaux is a mouse, but he is very different from other mice. He is a lot littler, and he has great big ears. He doesn't really know how to act like a mouse, and that bothers the other mice. Despereaux lives in a castle where the princess and the king live. One day, Despereaux finds himself right next to the princess and the king. As soon as his spots the princess, he knows that he is in love with her and would do anything to make her happy. When he is seen talking to the princess, the other mice banish him to the dungeons where he will be killed and eaten by the rats. Roscuro is a rat who lives in the dungeon. He has been angry ever since a very important incident involving the princess. Princess Pea lives with her father, the king. The queen died years ago when a rat fell into her soup. Miggery Sow is a young girl who no one ever listens to. She is sold by her father and is sent to live with a man who beats her when she makes mistakes. She would give anything to be a princess. These stories all connect in The Tale of Despereaux. I really enjoyed this beautiful book about bravery and kindness. The story is funny and heartbreaking at the same time. Why has it taken me so long to get to this book? I want to read all of DiCamillo's other books now!

Published: 1937 Imagine that you are sitting in your home, excited to spend your day relaxing and eating. All of a sudden your doorbell rings, and someone invites themselves inside. Then, your doorbell rings again, and another person invites themselves inside. Soon you have a house full of loud and needy guests who tell you, “Oh, by the way, you’re coming with us on a dangerous adventure, and you might die.” This happens to Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit. And the people who come into his house are actually dwarves and a powerful wizard named Gandalf. Off Bilbo goes on this journey that he never really signed up for. They are after their treasures and gold that a dragon named Smaug has stolen. On their journey they meet trolls and are kidnapped by goblins. They meet creatures like the Lord of the Eagles, and a man who can turn into a bear. There are giant talking spiders and an enchanted stream. The dwarves think of Bilbo as an incompetent creature who doesn’t bring much to the table on this journey, but Bilbo proves himself along the way. I am kind of ashamed to admit that I have never read The Hobbit before now! I don't know why I waited this long. The journey was entertaining, and I found that I related a lot to the character of Bilbo Baggins, who often wished for his warm bed and some food instead of the excitement of the journey. Reading this book has made me want to read the books in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. |
