Published: 2019 Hetty is living at the Raxter School for Girls, a boarding school on an island that was put under quarantine a year and a half ago when the girls started getting sick with something they call the Tox. No one knows what exactly is causing it, and the symptoms of the sickness are a fever followed by something really, really strange and painfuyl. For example, one girl grew another spine, and another girl's hand grew scales. Many end up dying from the Tox. The animals on the island have become infected to and are now more dangerous than ever. The government sends supplies to the girls but not everyone is allowed to go outside of the gates of the school. Hetty is picked to go help with food pick-up and while she's there she discovers that the people at the school are hiding something. When her best friend gets a fever and then disappears, Hetty decides she needs to go find her and uncover what is really happening at this school. Wilder Girls is a dystopian story! It reminded me of The Grace Year by Kim Liggett.

Published: 2021 Cal, Ivy, and Mateo all used to be really good friends, but now they don't even talk to each other. It's not that they are mad--they just grew apart. One day they are all late to school and meet each other in the parking lot. They decide randomly that they are going to skip school and go on an adventure. While they are driving, they soon decide that it was a mistake; they don't really have anything to say to each other. But then they see another student, Boney, walking into a building mysteriously. They decide to follow him and by the time they get up there they find his dead body. Absolutely horrified, the three run away from the scene of the crime. But on the news they report that a witness saw a blond girl with a ponytail attack Boney. This description matches Ivy, so the three decide they need to figure out what actually happened or else they will become suspects. But all three teenagers are keeping secrets from one another. Did they accidentally run into each other or was it somehow a setup from the beginning? McManus delivers another addictive thriller! Fans of her other books will enjoy this one! Author: Rex Ogle
Published: 2021 Rex Ogle continues his story from Free Lunch in his newest memoir Punching Bag. Ogle writes about his abusive childhood and some of the horrible things he had to go through. He writes about how his baby sister was never even able to be born and how his mom blamed him for her death. He writes about how his mom and his stepfather, Sam, would physically fight each other so hard and how Rex himself was hit too. This story is absolutely heartbreaking. It is a tough read at some times due to the subject matter but I think middle schoolers would be able to handle it. I predict this will be a very popular read at our library. |
